On December 17th, 2008, S.A.Y. Detroit, the organization formed by Mitch Albom to aid the homeless in Detroit, and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries opened the S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic, a FREE clinic devoted to homeless and uninsured women and children. Open 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., the clinic provides maintenance and preventative healthcare with special attention to most common health problems. We also offer FREE TRANSPORTATION to Wayne and Oakland homeless shelters and agencies. The clinic is staffed with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Medical Assistants, an Office Manager and Receptionist and relies on many medical volunteers in different specialties to meet the health needs of patients.

There is a growing population of children within the city of Detroit suffering without healthcare coverage. Challenged by transportation issues, poor finances and a lack of information regarding available options, the parents and guardians of these children often cannot locate – and thus forgo- preventative healthcare for these most vulnerable members of our community. This means that immunizations are not received, minor health issues become exacerbated, and the health needs of these children are too often handled in a crisis situation in a Detroit area emergency room.

These challenges are the same for underserved women who struggle with serious disease processes, life challenges and even homelessness.

In the Detroit Area

Over 550,000 individuals are without health insurance in the Detroit area. Close to 100,000 of these individuals are children ages 10 and under.
